As a small business owner from 2008 - 2015, I struggled with finding and keeping the best employees. I had a hunch that offering comprehensive health benefits to my staff would change the perception from their position being a "job" to an actual "career". Offering benefits instantly creates a culture where employees feel as though their employer cares about them - not just rhetoric, but actually putting something into practice that proves it.
Over the start-up phase of my business, I had contacted the Lee Kinasewich once or twice, as I had joined the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce and was intrigued by the pooled insurance plan they had on offer. Unfortunately I was "too busy" to get back to Lee the first couple of times, and the benefits idea was shelved for a couple of years.
Struggling with turnover and feeling like I'd hit a brick wall because the growth of my business depended on expanding my employee base, I once again contacted the Chamber, determined to finally get benefits for me and my staff.
Almost instantly, Lee returned my call and we set up a meeting the very next day. Lee met me at our location and explained the different options and plans. Not conversant with benefits, other than using them at my former jobs, I explained what we needed, what our budget was, and the additional features myself as a business owner was interested in pursuing.
Within a couple of days, Lee contacted me with some plan designs and their prices. I was so grateful that he did all the work, taking into consideration the needs of my business and financial state, and custom-designed a perfect plan for my business. He also explained the importance of a critical illness policy for a business owner.
What a relief it was to know me, my staff, and my business were now protected by a group insurance plan. I also noticed an immediate improvement in the longevity, health and happiness of my employees. It felt wonderful knowing my staff and their partners and children were now protected and cared for.
Three years after I first became involved with the Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan as a client, I am now thrilled to join Summit Benefits Consulting as their Marketing Manager. I truly believe in the impact employee benefits makes on a small business and am excited to help other entrepreneurs like myself improve their organizations.
